Japan Develops Breakthrough Green Hydrogen Technology for Cleaner Energy

Scientists from Japan have developed a new material and method to boost efficiency and safety in a proof-of-concept green hydrogen reactor, paving the way for cleaner energy production. The innovative technology successfully operated outdoors for three years, surpassing laboratory conditions.

The researchers utilized photocatalysts, materials that convert sunlight into chemical energy, to produce green hydrogen from sun and water. This process enables the use of renewable energy anywhere and anytime.

Two-step systems were developed using a conductive layer made of gold or indium tin oxide, allowing for safer and more efficient production. The new design uses scalable photocatalyst sheets, making maintenance and operation easier.

The technology has shown promise with an 1.5 times higher solar energy conversion efficiency under natural sunlight. However, the current rate is around 1%, requiring significant improvement to reach a cost-effective and space-efficient level.

Experts emphasize that increasing efficiency in solar-to-chemical energy conversion by photocatalysts is crucial for mass production and large-scale plant construction. Governments are also highlighted as key players in setting safety and environmental standards for green hydrogen technology, which will impact policy and infrastructure development.
