A man has been executed in Japan for the first time in eight years, bringing an end to a moratorium on capital punishment. Takahiro Shiraishi, also known as the “Twitter killer”, was convicted of murdering nine people, including young women who had considered suicide. He lured them to his home using social media before killing and dismembering them.
The execution marks Japan’s first use of the death penalty since 2022, according to the country’s minister of justice. Shiraishi’s case highlights the complexities of capital punishment in Japan, where it has been suspended for several years due to concerns over its morality and constitutionality.
