Japan Sets Record for Hottest July on Record

Japan has experienced its hottest July on record, according to the country’s weather agency. The average temperature in July was a record 2.89C higher than the 1991-2020 average. This is the third year in a row of record-breaking temperatures for the month. Heatwaves are becoming more intense and frequent globally due to human-caused climate change, with Japan being no exception.

A heatwave on July 30 reached 41.2C in western Hyogo region, setting a new high temperature. The country also saw record low rainfall in July, particularly in northern regions near the Sea of Japan. Experts warn that the warmer climate is causing cherry trees to bloom earlier and sometimes not flowering at all.

The famous snowcap of Mount Fuji was absent for an extended period last year, only appearing until early November compared to its usual appearance in early October. This extreme weather pattern is a result of human-driven climate change, which scientists say is making heatwaves more frequent and intense worldwide.
