Authorities in Japan have rescued a 27-year-old Chinese college student who climbed Mount Fuji twice in the same week, once when he fell ill and again after returning to retrieve his belongings.
The climber reached the summit before experiencing altitude sickness on Tuesday. A second rescue was necessary Saturday after he felt unwell while at an altitude of over 3,000 meters.
His life is not in danger, police said. The student made the double ascent outside the official climbing season, which runs from July 10 to September 10, when trails are closed and most signs have been removed.
To address overcrowding issues, new rules were introduced in March, including a permit fee of 4,000 yen ($28) for climbers. The mountain is restricted to 4,000 visitors per day, double the number from previous years.
Previous measures included requiring climbers to wear proper gear and take safety classes before climbing. New restrictions will include closing the mountain between 2 p.m. and 3 a.m. to non-overnight visitors.
