The Jason Bourne action franchise, which has been a staple at Universal Pictures for over two decades, is looking to find a new home. The rights to the character have reverted back to the Robert Ludlum estate, and Warner Mitchell Entertainment (WME) is shopping them to other studios and streamers. Skydance, Apple, and Netflix are reportedly in talks with the estate, while even Universal could win back the rights if they’re willing to make a significant offer.
The franchise’s future is uncertain, but it’s clear that Matt Damon will not continue as the lead actor. The last film, Jason Bourne (2016), was a moderate success at the box office, taking in $415 million worldwide, but received mixed reviews from audiences and critics. In an interview, Damon acknowledged the lukewarm reception, stating that “maybe people are done with the character.”
The Jason Bourne franchise has a rich history, dating back to 2002’s The Bourne Identity, which was followed by several successful films, including The Bourne Supremacy, The Bourne Ultimatum, and Jason Bourne. However, with Amazon taking control of the James Bond franchise, it’s unlikely that another classic spy franchise will fall under the umbrella of a streaming service.
As the search for a new home continues, one thing is certain: any studio or streamer that secures the rights to Jason Bourne will want to make a fresh start and create an intriguing story for the next installment.
