Jay North, the actor best known for playing Dennis Mitchell in the classic TV series “Dennis the Menace,” has passed away at the age of 73. North’s friend and producer Laurie Jacobson announced his death on Facebook, saying he died peacefully at home after a long battle with cancer.
North rose to fame as a child actor and went on to star in several films and television shows, including “Zebra in the Kitchen” and “Arabian Knights.” However, he also spoke publicly about the emotional toll of being a child actor, revealing that his aunt, who was his studio guardian, physically abused him.
In later years, North took up roles in voice acting and appeared at fan conventions, where he expressed gratitude to fans for remembering and loving their work. After leaving show business, he worked as a correctional officer and helped mentor young actors through the advocacy group A Minor Consideration.
North is survived by his wife Cindy Hackney and three stepdaughters. He was remembered fondly by friends and fellow actors, who praised his heart and resilience in the face of adversity.
