Rapper Jay-Z is seeking to have a lawsuit dropped accusing him of raping a 13-year-old girl in 2000. The lawsuit, filed by Alabama woman Jane Doe, claims that Jay-Z and fellow musician Sean “Diddy” Combs drugged and attacked her at a house party following the MTV Video Music Awards.
However, inconsistencies have emerged in Ms. Doe’s allegations, which have raised questions about their validity. Her father has told NBC News that he cannot recall driving five hours to pick her up after the alleged assault, as she claims. This has led Jay-Z’s lawyer, Alex Spiro, to ask the court to dismiss the case.
Jay-Z has issued a statement denying the allegations and claiming that his lawyer filed the lawsuit in pursuit of money and fame. His attorney, Tony Buzbee, has maintained that Ms. Doe stands by her claim, despite acknowledging some mistakes.
Experts say it is common for victims of sexual assault to misremember details, especially if they have been allegedly drugged. The Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network (RAINN) director Erinn Robinson stated that trauma from rape can affect memory and decision-making, leading to fragmented memories and inconsistent recollections.
The lawsuit against Jay-Z and Combs is part of a larger number of sexual assault lawsuits filed against Combs, who is currently awaiting trial on federal sex-trafficking charges in New York. He has denied all allegations.
