The mayor of Jenin, Mohammad Jarrar, has described the Israeli assault on the refugee camp as similar to the war in Gaza, with 120 buildings destroyed and 15,000 people displaced. The destruction has left thousands of families without homes, amidst a shortage of food, water, and medication.
Jarrar stated that the operation was “political” and aimed at annexing the West Bank, forcing Palestinians to emigrate from the territory. Israeli troops are expected to remain in the camp after their current operation is complete, sparking concerns about the future of the West Bank.
The UNRWA has described the Jenin camp as a “ghost town,” with operations by both Israeli and Palestinian security forces leading to the forced displacement of thousands of residents. The agency warned that the assault undermines the fragile ceasefire in Gaza, risking a new escalation.
More than 40 Palestinians have been killed across the West Bank since the operation began, with over 25 from Jenin. Dozens have been injured, according to the Palestinian Ministry of Health.
