Former Barclays CEO Jes Staley has admitted to having sex with a member of Jeffrey Epstein’s staff in court, as he appeals against a proposed financial services ban. Staley was questioned by the Financial Conduct Authority about his relationship with Epstein, who was a client at JPMorgan where Staley worked.
Staley stated that he had a consensual encounter with the woman at Epstein’s brother’s apartment in New York. He also acknowledged having a close friendship with Epstein, described as “profound” in one email chain.
The Financial Conduct Authority has cited over 1,000 emails between Staley and Epstein, which suggest a personal relationship. However, Staley claims to have no recollection of some of the emails.
Staley’s evidence is ongoing, with his final statement expected on Friday. The Financial Conduct Authority proposes a ban for Staley and fines him £1.8 million ($2.3 million) for allegedly misleading the watchdog over his relationship with Epstein.
