Jesse Eisenberg Speaks Out Against Facebook’s Decision to Drop Independent Fact-Checking

Actor Jesse Eisenberg, who played Mark Zuckerberg in The Social Network, has expressed his concerns about Facebook’s decision to drop independent fact-checking from its platform. Eisenberg believes that this move is problematic and can lead to the spread of misinformation.

The decision was made by Meta, the parent company of Facebook, in response to criticism from US President Donald Trump, who accused the company’s fact-checking policy of censorship of conservative voices. Instead, Meta will use “community notes” that allow users to challenge the accuracy of posts.

Eisenberg told BBC Radio 4 that he is concerned about the potential impact on public safety and free expression. He questioned why Facebook’s executives, who have amassed vast amounts of wealth, are prioritizing their relationships with influential people over using their resources for good.

“The fact that these people have billions upon billions of dollars and what they’re doing with it to curry favor with someone who is preaching hate is very concerning,” Eisenberg said. This sentiment was echoed by Trump, who praised Zuckerberg’s decision as a step in the right direction. However, critics like Eisenberg are worried about the potential consequences of this move on public discourse and safety.
