Jessica Simpson has released her first single, “Use My Heart Against Me,” from her new EP, Nashville Canyon: Part 1. The singer, 44, had recently announced the end of her 10-year marriage to Eric Johnson, with whom she shares three children.
In this week’s PEOPLE, Simpson talks about how making music in Nashville helped her heal after a painful breakup. She credits the experience with rediscovering her voice and finding freedom in her music. “I’ve grown up so much,” she says. “I can handle so much.”
Simpson also reflects on co-parenting her children, Maxwell, Ace, and Birdie, who spent time at their rental home in Franklin, Tenn., while their mom worked on the EP. The singer is grateful to have her children and ex-husband Eric still in her life.
The new EP, Nashville Canyon: Part 1, will be released on March 21, featuring soulful and rockabilly-infused songs that Simpson discovered on her own in Nashville. “Discovering this music was a way for me to own myself and declare it,” she says.
Simpson, who has come a long way since her early days as a pop star, is now embracing her freedom and autonomy in music. “I am a woman now, and I can do what I want,” she says.
