More than 200 Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) employees have lost their homes in the devastating Eaton fire, which has destroyed thousands of structures across over 14,000 acres in Altadena. JPL Director Laurie Leshin confirmed on social media that many employees suffered damage or displacement due to the fire.
Leshin expressed her condolences to those affected, praising the resilience and strength of the JPL community. The facility has been closed to employees and visitors since last week due to being within an evacuation zone, with operations temporarily relocated to a backup center. However, operations have now resumed at the main site.
A JPL principal mission designer, Martin Lo, 72, lost his home in the fire along with his husband William Wentzel. They were able to save some belongings but are currently staying elsewhere. Lo praised JPL’s response to the crisis, saying it was “heartwarming” to see colleagues and friends offer support.
The fire has had a significant impact on JPL employees, particularly those with young children who are struggling to cope with the situation. A Caltech and JPL Disaster Relief Fund has been set up to assist affected employees.
