The Winnipeg Jets have set their franchise record for wins in a season with a 3-1 victory over the St. Louis Blues on Monday, ending the Blues’ 12-game winning streak. The Jets are now five points ahead of the Dallas Stars for first place in the Central Division and Western Conference.
Winnipeg’s Alex Iafallo scored twice, including the game-winner at 7:05 of the third period, while Morgan Barron also found the net once. Adam Lowry sealed the win with an empty-net goal in the final minutes. Connor Hellebuyck made 14 saves for the Jets.
“We’re still after something here, we’re still trying to get that division,” said Winnipeg coach Scott Arniel. “It’s amazing that we’re at [win] 53 and we still haven’t clinched the division.”
The Blues’ captain, Brayden Schenn, acknowledged the Jets’ strong defensive play, saying “They’re top of the League, right? They’re there for a reason.” The loss keeps St. Louis two points ahead of the Minnesota Wild for the first wild card into the Stanley Cup Playoffs from the Western Conference.
The Blues’ coach, Jim Montgomery, praised Hellebuyck’s performance, calling him one of the best goalies in the league. “So, [it] speaks for itself. They’ve done a great job all year. They’re the measuring stick in the West.”
The Jets’ win moves them closer to breaking their franchise record set in 2017-18 with 114 wins.
