Jets Name Justin Fields as QB1, Committing to Young Quarterback

The New York Jets have officially named quarterback Justin Fields as their new QB1, with general manager Darren Mougey confirming the move at the annual league meeting. Fields, who was signed to a two-year, $40 million contract in free agency, now boasts starter’s money and a guaranteed $30 million.

Mougey stated that the organization believes in Fields’ abilities, saying he can replicate the career trajectory of Sam Darnold and Baker Mayfield. This optimism stems from Fields’ six-game stint with the Pittsburgh Steelers last season, where he averaged 184 passing yards per start and posted a career-high 65.8% completion rate.

Fields, who has rushed for 2,509 yards in four seasons, brings a unique athletic skill set to the table. The Jets hope he can be their long-term answer at quarterback but are prepared to pivot if it doesn’t work out. A backup in Tyrod Taylor is already in place, and the team has several players looking for contract extensions.

While Fields’ addition won’t preclude drafting another quarterback in the future, Mougey declined to speculate on this front. Contract talks with wide receiver Allen Lazard are ongoing, with the Jets trying to secure a significant pay cut from him.
