The New York Jets have released wide receiver Davante Adams, their favorite target under former quarterback Aaron Rodgers, just three weeks after parting ways with Rodgers himself. The move comes as a surprise but is largely due to the $38.3 million cap hit Adams was set to receive this year, making him the league high for wide receivers.
By cutting Adams, the Jets have cleared $29.9 million from their cap, allowing them to become more aggressive in free agency and shedding remnants of the Rodgers era. Adams’ release also means that Allen Lazard, another receiver favored by Rodgers, will likely follow suit as he seeks a trade before the start of the league year.
The move marks a significant shift for the Jets, who had gone all-in on Rodgers two years ago, acquiring some of his former Green Bay Packers teammates. However, with Adams’ departure, they now face a daunting task at wide receiver, with only Garrett Wilson and Xavier Gipson among their top holdovers.
Adams, 32, had spent eight years with the Packers and was traded to the Raiders last year before joining the Jets. His departure leaves the door open for the Jets to focus on other areas of need as they rebuild under new regime coach Aaron Glenn and general manager Darren Mougey.
