A dramatic video has surfaced, capturing two of the thieves wanted in the $102 million jewel heist at the Louvre exiting the museum on a mobile cherry picker and fleeing on motorbikes with stolen jewels.
French law enforcement is reviewing the video for clues as part of the investigation. The footage shows the thieves entering the Apollo Gallery through power tools before making their getaway on a motorcycle. Investigators believe they are racing against time to catch the culprits, fearing they will dismantle and fence the stolen goods.
The thieves stole eight pieces of jewelry, including two tiaras from Queen Marie-Amelie’s collection. DNA evidence found on one of the suspects’ gloves has been analyzed in hopes of finding a match.
The Louvre director testified before France’s Senate Culture Committee, stating that the museum’s security system worked properly but failed to adapt to a new type of attack. The committee rejected her resignation, which she submitted after the heist.
