Philadelphia Phillies closer Jhoan Duran avoided what could have been a major injury blow after being carted off the field during Friday’s game against the Nationals. Duran was hit by Paul DeJong’s comebacker on his right ankle and showed signs of discomfort, prompting medical staff to summon a cart.
However, subsequent tests revealed that Duran’s x-rays were negative, and he himself reported feeling “100 percent” today. The reliever also walked freely through the clubhouse without any noticeable limp, suggesting that an IL stint may not be necessary.
Duran’s injury is a significant relief for the Phillies, who acquired him at the trade deadline in exchange for top prospects Mick Abel and Eduardo Tait. Despite initial concerns about his high price tag, Duran has been nothing short of stellar since joining the team, posting a 1.86 ERA and 25.5% strikeout rate over 53.3 combined innings.
The Phillies’ rotation is also expected to receive a boost with the return of ace Aaron Nola and third baseman Alec Bohm from injury. Nola, who has been sidelined for over three months due to an ankle sprain, will make his first start in over nine weeks on Sunday. Meanwhile, Bohm, who has missed four weeks with a fractured left rib, is set to be activated from the 10-day IL and return to action.
Manager Rob Thomson’s decision to operate with a six-man rotation for at least one week will also help keep his starters’ arms fresh as they push towards the playoffs. With Duran now expected to avoid any significant setback, the Phillies are looking solid heading into their weekend series against the Nationals.
