Former Ohio State defensive coordinator Jim Knowles has explained why he left his role to join Penn State as the team’s new defensive coordinator. The decision was influenced by Knowles’ strong connection to the program, which dates back to his childhood in Philadelphia. Although he previously stated that Penn State’s campus felt like a world away, Knowles has always been drawn to the program.
When Ohio State offered Knowles an opportunity after completing their national championship run, he considered staying with the Buckeyes but ultimately chose the lucrative offer of $3.1 million annually and the chance to help lead Penn State’s team to a similar title. Knowles cited his appreciation for the support he received during his time at Ohio State under coach Ryan Day.
At 59, Knowles sees this as an opportunity to continue his coaching career with a program that has historically emphasized defense. He was impressed by James Franklin’s defensive culture and acknowledges that some may perceive him as an offensive coach but notes his experience in building stout defenses. With the departure of two other Ohio State assistants, Knowles joins a trio of departures from the Buckeyes’ staff.
Knowles is set to face off against his former team when Penn State takes on Ohio State in Columbus on November 1.
