In 1969, Vogue model Linda Keith, 23, was struggling with addiction. Her parents, fearing for her well-being, sought help from renowned psychiatrist William Sargant, who advocated for brutal methods like lobotomy and electroconvulsive therapy (ECT). Keith refused treatment but was subsequently admitted to Ward 5 at St Thomas’ Hospital in London’s “Sleep Room”, a grim unit where patients were kept in darkness and silence. Despite initial resistance, Keith eventually underwent the treatment, which was intended to curb her addiction.
