Former US President Jimmy Carter, a Navy engineer and politician who led the country through a tumultuous term from 1977 to 1981, has passed away at the age of 100. His death follows that of his wife Rosalynn Carter, who was diagnosed with dementia last month.
Carter’s presidency was marked by significant events, including his campaign against the Vietnam War and Watergate scandal, which led to President Nixon’s resignation. He also launched new departments and deregulated industries. However, his term was also marred by inflation and a hostage crisis in Iran, which lasted 444 days.
The US stock market will observe a moment of silence ahead of Monday’s open, with the NYSE and Nasdaq closing on January 9 to honor Carter’s memory. The National Day of Mourning has been declared by President Joe Biden, and US flags will be flown at half-staff for 30 days at federal buildings and military bases.
Carter was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2002 for his decades-long efforts to promote peace, democracy, and human rights. He spent much of his retirement supporting charities through The Carter Center and Habitat For Humanity. His wife Rosalynn passed away on November 19, also at the age of 96, just a few days before her husband’s death.
The former president had celebrated his 100th birthday in October, marking a remarkable milestone. He and Rosalynn are the longest-married presidential couple, having celebrated their 77th wedding anniversary in July.
