Jimmy Kimmel has again come to the defense of California Governor Gavin Newsom and Los Angeles, criticizing President Donald Trump for his response to recent protests in the city.
Kimmel argues that Trump is trying to create anarchy by mobilizing 4,000 National Guard troops and 700 active-duty Marines to quell demonstrations against Newsom’s policies. However, Kimmel points out that during a devastating wildfire last year, Trump did nothing.
The late-night host showed a clip of Trump claiming that Newsom is doing a bad job, causing death and potential death. Trump also claimed that if the National Guard hadn’t been deployed, Los Angeles would be burning right now.
Kimmel sarcastically replied, “No, it would be calm and sunny and 70 degrees, just like it is right now.” He also defended Los Angeles from claims of chaos, saying protesters are demonstrating peacefully to voice their opposition to Trump’s policies.
Trump, Kimmel argues, wants conflict and is intentionally inflaming the situation. This isn’t the first time Kimmel has defended Los Angeles against Trump’s attacks in a time of crisis – he previously called out Trump for his “vile” claims during last year’s wildfires.
Kimmel also pointed to last year’s wildfires and asked if anyone believes Trump’s claim that he saved L.A. by turning on a fire-fighting faucet. Kimmel concluded, “Putting out a fire you purposely started doesn’t make you a firefighter. It makes you an arsonist with a hose.”
