JOANN Closes 21 Stores in Washington State Amid Bankruptcy Filing

SEATTLE — The craft supply chain JOANN is facing financial difficulties, as it plans to close 21 stores in Washington state as part of its bankruptcy process. The company has filed a motion seeking court approval to close approximately 500 stores nationwide.

Customers are expressing concern about losing their go-to location for crafting supplies, citing the emotional and therapeutic benefits of browsing fabric and other materials. “It’s like therapy…it’s a way to be productive,” said Marie Witherell, a customer who regularly visits JOANN stores in Washington state.

The decision to close stores was made after a careful analysis of store performance and future strategic fit for the company. Company leaders emphasized that right-sizing its store footprint is crucial to ensuring the best path forward for the business.

JOANN originally filed for bankruptcy in March 2024 but was able to become a private company and keep all of its stores open. However, it has since filed for bankruptcy again due to inventory issues. The Washington locations set to be closed include:
