Joann Closes 500 Stores, Impact Varies Across US States

Fabric and craft retailer Joann Stores is set to close approximately 500 locations across the US in the coming weeks. The company’s recent bankruptcy filing has led to this decision. According to court documents, 533 stores will be closing across 49 states, with Hawaii being the only exception.

The impact of these closures will be felt unevenly, with Florida and California having the most store closures. However, the number of residents affected per store is relatively small. For example, in New Hampshire, seven closures amount to about one for every 165,000 residents.

Illinois, Michigan, and other Great Lakes states have around 200 closures, mostly concentrated in metropolitan areas like Detroit and Chicago. California has the largest number of closures, with six in ten planned in Southern California towns and cities, including over 20 in the Los Angeles area. The Joann closures in Florida are spread relatively evenly across the state.

In a statement, Joann expressed that this decision was difficult but necessary due to store performance and future strategic fit. The company will close around 18 stores in Texas, with one for every 1.3 million residents.
