A nationwide shutdown of Joann Fabrics has sent shockwaves throughout the Minnesota creative community, with many artists and designers expressing devastation at the news.
The Ohio-based retailer had operated 21 stores in Minnesota before filing for bankruptcy in January. Despite efforts to restructure, the company announced the closure of all 800 stores earlier this week. For many creatives, Joann was a one-stop shop for sewing and crafting supplies, including fabrics, trims, buttons, and last-minute items.
Freelance costume designer Sarah Bahr described the loss as “devastating,” saying that the absence of Joann would limit her ability to make last-minute design changes on a budget. Local fabric stores, such as SR Harris Fabrics in Burnsville and Brooklyn Park, will likely fill part of the void, but many artists are already making plans to source materials out of state.
The closure is particularly concerning for drag performers like Dobbs DeCorsey, who relies heavily on Joann for fabric supplies. “It’s going to change how I have to source fabric,” he said. “I’m looking into sourcing materials in Chicago.”
Cathy Blaukat, a quilter from Mankato, expressed concern that local quilt shops would struggle to meet the demand left by Joann. Many quilters prefer to source their supplies directly from the store, as it allows them to touch and feel the fabrics.
As the news spreads, fabric stores like SR Harris and The Sewing Lounge are already experiencing an influx of customers seeking alternative shopping options. While some owners are optimistic about the potential impact on their businesses, others remain uncertain about how the loss of Joann will affect their supply chain.
