Joaquin Phoenix Stars in Dark Satire on America’s Culture Wars

Joaquin Phoenix stars in “Eddington”, a darkly satirical thriller set in a small New Mexico town during the Covid era. The film, directed by Ari Aster, is an unsettling take on America’s culture wars, exploring themes of toxic politics, conspiracy theories, and inter-generational tensions.

Phoenix plays a deeply flawed sheriff trying to maintain order in the face of divisive protests, mask mandates, and conflicting realities. Director Aster believes that America has lost its social forces that have always been at the center of mass liberal democracies, citing Covid as the catalyst for this loss.

The film parodies various groups, from gun-loving conservatives to virtue-signaling activists. Emma Stone stars alongside Phoenix’s character, whose wife becomes embroiled in a world of right-wing conspiracy theorists. Aster aims to dramatize America’s polarized politics and breakdown in trust, warning that mass violence could be the result.

“Eddington” features an all-star cast, including Pedro Pascal and Austin Butler, and is set to compete for the prestigious Palme d’Or award at Cannes. The film will be released internationally in July, following its world premiere at the festival.
