Joe Gibbs Racing has introduced a new pit road strategy for this year’s Daytona 500. Bozi Tatrevic, a writer at Road and Track and Motorsport, explained the approach in a thread on X.
When a car pulls up to its designated pit box, a crew member will hold up a tablet facing the driver while fueling is being done. The tablet displays a timer showing how long it takes to fill the tank. Once the tank is full, the timer goes off and the screen turns green, signaling the driver to leave.
According to Tatrevic, there may be an app connected from the pit box to the tablet that continuously updates the time needed for each lap. This would ensure the countdown is accurate and ready when the crew member hits the button.
The strategy is innovative but not cheating, as it aims to reduce pit road times and level the playing field for all Cup Series teams. Joe Gibbs Racing driver Chase Briscoe will start first in his Daytona 500 debut with this new approach.
