Actor Penn Badgley has opened up about the true intentions behind his character Joe Goldberg in the popular series You. In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Badgley suggests that Joe’s hypothesis – “that we are the problem” – is both a cop-out and true.
Badgley explains that the show’s success lies not in Joe changing for the better, but in how it reflects on its viewers. “I think again: do we need to see him change? What would actually be the conditions for him to change meaningfully?” he asks. The answer, according to Badgley, is that audiences want to see themselves in Joe’s character, as he represents a societal issue – toxic love addiction.
The 38-year-old actor believes that Joe’s charm and charisma are meant to make viewers fall in love with him, while also delivering satire and social commentary. While some may blame audiences for falling for Joe’s character, Badgley defends his portrayal, saying it was intentional to elicit this reaction.
Looking back on the show, Badgley reflects on how playing Joe Goldberg has impacted his life. He admits that the experience has led him to reflect on himself and become a better person. “It’s possible that these reflections have led me towards being a better man and husband and father,” he says. The final season of You is now streaming on Netflix.
