HBO Max is closing in on its Dumbledore casting with American actor John Lithgow reportedly near a deal to play the iconic role. With 137 TV and film credits, including Oscar-nominated performances in Conclave and Killers of the Flower Moon, Lithgow’s name has been linked to various parts, most recently this one.
Lithgow would be an experienced choice for the British part, having played Winston Churchill before. However, concerns surround his age – 79 years old at the time of potential casting. The show won’t air until 2026 or 2027, making it unlikely that Lithgow could still convincingly portray Dumbledore by the end of the series.
Other actors rumored for various roles include Paapa Essiedu as Snape, Sharon Horgan or Lesley Manville for McGonagall, and Cillian Murphy endorsed by Ralph Fiennes for Voldemort. Notably, some casting choices raise eyebrows due to age disparities – particularly Paapa Essiedu’s unlikely fit for the awkward and menacing Snape.
While a deal seems close, it remains uncertain whether Lithgow can convincingly play Dumbledore given his advanced age at the time of production.
