Best of Late Night took a look at the previous night’s highlights. Monday’s show featured a surprise guest, British comedian and “Last Week Tonight” host John Oliver, who crashed Jon Stewart’s monologue.
Oliver began by saying he wanted to be “the first to welcome America to its monarchy era.” He joked about how American democracy has been experimenting with checks and balances since the founding days. However, he claimed that America is now doing a good job of emulating imperial powers like the British Empire.
Stewart pushed back against Oliver’s claims, saying that the imperial model may not suit America. In response, Oliver pointed out that America has done its share of empire-building in recent years, including invasions and economic exploitation.
The conversation took a lighthearted turn when Stewart asked Oliver if he was there to offer wisdom and counsel. Oliver replied that he came to “gloat.” The exchange ended with Oliver claiming that America should welcome itself into the pantheon of great empires alongside the British and other historical powers.
Other news and highlights included Seth Meyers’ reaction to President Trump’s Super Bowl appearance, Jimmy Kimmel’s commentary on the game’s slow pace, and a surprise visit from David Letterman on “Late Night with Jimmy Fallon.” The Oscar-nominated star Mikey Madison is set to appear on “Late Night with Seth Meyers” on Tuesday night.
