Stewart noted how Trump claims to want to take America back to an earlier era, but realized he needed to go further back to understand Trump’s intentions. Oliver then stepped in, saying America had “a little fun” experimenting with democracy and now owes the British monarchy an apology for its colonial past.
Oliver mocked the country’s procedural system, pointing out that 51 votes are required to pass a bill and that the vice president often breaks ties. He also accused Americans of wanting a more efficient system, which sounds good but isn’t. Stewart conceded the point, acknowledging America’s imperial ambitions despite itself.
The exchange was a humorous takedown of Trump’s claims about restoring an American monarchy.
