Johnny Depp claims he was a “crash test dummy” for the #MeToo movement during his defamation trial against Amber Heard, saying he “took it all in”. The 62-year-old actor told the Times of London that his unnamed friends had doubted him, even at his children’s parties.
Depp stated that his trial, which preceded the #MeToo movement, made him a “target” for scrutiny. He said: “And so I wanted from the hundreds of people I’ve met in that industry to see who was playing it safe.”
The #MeToo movement was founded by survivor Tarana Burke in 2006 and went viral with actress Alyssa Milano’s tweet in 2017. Heard accused Depp of domestic violence in 2016, before he sued her for defamation in 2019.
Depp lost the trial, but won a settlement with his ex-wife last year. His ex-girlfriend Bianca Butti claimed that Heard was in an abusive relationship with him. Butti stated: “If I made a sudden move during an argument, she would recoil.”
