A Los Angeles jury has awarded $40 million to two women who claim that using Johnson & Johnson’s talcum powder caused their ovarian cancer. The company plans to appeal the verdict, which is the latest development in a long-standing legal battle over talc and its link to cancer.
Johnson & Johnson stopped selling baby powder made with talc worldwide in 2023 after sales declined. However, another California jury recently ordered the company to pay $966 million to the family of a woman who died of mesothelioma due to asbestos contamination.
In this latest case, one woman received $18 million and the other $22 million. The company’s attorney claims that they were “loyal” customers but notes that loyalty was not reciprocated by Johnson & Johnson.
