Joly Addresses Global Challenges at G7 Meeting

Canada’s Foreign Affairs Minister Melanie Joly welcomed counterparts from the US, Europe and Japan to Quebec for a meeting with the Group of Seven foreign ministers. Joly emphasized the need for collective action to address global challenges, saying “we must meet the moment” in response to instability around the world.

The G7 meeting comes days after Ukraine said it would be willing to accept a ceasefire if Russia agrees to certain conditions. Canadian Minister Joly welcomed this development and expressed her country’s commitment to peace, citing prisoner exchanges, civilian detainee releases, and Ukrainian child returns as key elements.

Russian President Vladimir Putin agreed in principle with a US proposal for a 30-day ceasefire in Ukraine but said the terms have yet to be worked out. The US has vetoed a Canadian proposal aimed at cracking down on Russian “shadow fleet” oil tankers evading Western economic sanctions.

The G7 gathering also discussed security threats, including maritime issues and undersea infrastructure sabotage. Joly highlighted Canada’s efforts to combat illegal fishing in Southeast Asia and military co-operation with the Philippines. Japan stressed that how the Ukraine war ends could set wrong precedents for global security.

Canadian Minister Joly said she will use her meetings with foreign ministers to push back on US tariffs, which she views as aimed at annexing Canada. German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock suggested avoiding panic and emphasizing unity among G7 nations in response to Trump’s ambitions.
