Jon Hamm’s Twist on Suburban Scandal in ‘Your Friends & Neighbors’

Jon Hamm stars as Andrew Cooper, a hedge-fund hotshot whose life unravels when he loses his job and gets caught cheating on his wife. The new Apple TV+ series, created by Jonathan Tropper, explores the darker side of suburban culture, where wealth comes with secrets and rage.

In the show, Cooper’s life is turned upside down after a sexual indiscretion ruins his career and family. He becomes disillusioned with the values of his luxurious town, Westmont Village, and starts breaking into his friends’ houses to steal valuable items. This newfound hobby reveals their secrets, leading to a storyline filled with betrayal, theft, infidelity, and murder.

Unlike some shows that portray alpha males as toxic, Tropper’s creation is more nuanced, showcasing Cooper’s complexity as both a wounded soul and a self-centered man. Hamm brings his signature charm to the role, taking the character in a new direction that is funnier, sadder, and more sympathetic.

While the show offers little of the poetic lyricism found in John Cheever’s classic stories about suburbia, it does highlight the materialism and isolation of modern suburban life. The characters are more cut off from each other and noble values than their predecessors.

In a twist on Cooper’s past actions, he suffers less remorse for his thefts, especially since they’re targeting people who embody the same privileged values that led to his downfall. The show doesn’t judge him harshly, instead offering a nuanced portrayal of a character struggling to find his place in a changing world.
