Maryland Democratic delegation has chosen a new leader after the resignation of outgoing speaker Adrienne A. Jones.
Joseline Peña-Melnyk, 59, is now considered front-runner for the position. She received support from top candidates C.T. Wilson and Ben Barnes after they dropped out of the race.
Jones’ announcement sparked the transition process, with Peña-Melnyk saying she’s honored that other candidates have withdrawn their candidacy in her favor. Her background in health policy, immigrants’ rights, and racial equity has earned her significant expertise.
Peña-Melnyk has been a member of the House since 2003, serving on the Health and Government Operations Committee as its chair since 2022. She will be nominated for speaker by the Democratic delegation at their meeting on December 16.
