Josh Berry made history on Sunday at Las Vegas Motor Speedway, winning his first Cup Series victory with Wood Brothers Racing. The 34-year-old Tennessee driver, who had never won a Cup Series race before, took the lead in the final laps of the race and held off Daniel Suarez to secure the win.
Berry’s victory came after a strong start for the team, with Wood Brothers president Jon Wood praising Berry’s performance. “This one was legit,” Wood said. “You know sometimes they’ll put an asterisk besides a speedway race and say, ‘Well, it’s speedway racing.’ But [Berry] dominated those last 20 laps.”
Berry’s win marked the team’s first victory of the season and puts them back in contention for the playoffs. The Wood Brothers organization is celebrating its 75th season in NASCAR.
Suarez finished second, followed by Ryan Preece, William Byron, and Christopher Bell, who struggled with his car’s handling throughout the race. Berry’s win was a surprise to many, given he was a 40-1 underdog to win.
The victory marked Berry’s 53rd Cup Series start and fifth win with Wood Brothers Racing. The team has a tight alliance with Team Penske, which provides input on who drives the No. 21 car.
