Journal Removed from Academic Index for Quality Concerns

A prominent academic journal, Chemosphere, has been removed from a key index of scholarly publications after failing to meet quality criteria. The removal, announced by Clarivate, a leading publication analytics company, was confirmed via email and comes amid concerns over the journal’s editorial processes.

Chemosphere had retracted eight articles this month alone and published 60 expressions of concern since April. In response, the journal has taken steps to improve its article vetting and peer review processes, as well as ensure that articles are promptly retraced if necessary.

The removal from Clarivate’s Web of Science platform is significant for Chemosphere, which relies on this index to track citations and calculate its impact factor – a measure of relevance in its field. The journal had previously acknowledged quality concerns and outlined plans to address them.

While the exact reasons for the removal are unclear, it appears that Chemosphere failed to meet Clarivate’s editorial quality criteria. The company has strict standards for journals seeking inclusion in the Web of Science, and Chemosphere’s actions have sparked concerns over research integrity.
