Journalism Stuns Favorites to Win 150th Preakness Stakes

Journalism, ridden by Italian jockey Umberto Rispoli, pulled off a stunning upset in the 150th running of the Preakness Stakes on Saturday. The horse, trained by Michael McCarthy, came from behind to win the $2 million American classic race, taking the lead right at the quarter pole and outpacing the odds-on favorite.

The conditions proved favorable for Journalism, as the warm day and drying track allowed him to thrive after torrential rain had turned the course into a muddy mess just days earlier. In contrast, his rival Goal Oriented struggled in the soggy conditions.

McCarthy’s team expressed pride and relief at their second consecutive Triple Crown win, with McCarthy stating that he “couldn’t be prouder” of the horse. The victory marked Journalism’s first major success after a disappointing finish in the Kentucky Derby two weeks prior.

Rispoli, who became the first jockey from Italy to win any of the Triple Crown races, credited his horse’s determination and resilience for their triumph. “It’s all about him,” he said, noting that 20 years of his career flashed before his eyes as he crossed the finish line.

The win also marked a memorable chapter in Preakness history, with only two horses from the Kentucky Derby participating in this year’s event. McCarthy’s team will now turn their attention to the Belmont on June 7, where Sovereignty will attempt to redeem himself after skipping the Preakness.

Journalism’s victory solidified his claim for 3-year-old horse of the year and earned him a place in the annals of American racing history. As McCarthy noted, “This is for Altadena,” a poignant reminder of the team’s perseverance and dedication despite recent challenges.
