LAist’s independent reporting is under threat as federal funding for public media disappears. But with your support, we can continue to provide essential coverage of Southern California’s news and issues.
A recent announcement by the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) confirmed that 11% of its workforce – approximately 550 employees – will be laid off on Tuesday. The cuts are part of a reorganization aimed at creating a leaner infrastructure, focusing on core technical capabilities, and maintaining fiscal discipline.
The layoffs are not related to the government shutdown, according to JPL Director Dave Gallagher. However, some missions may still be affected, particularly those without additional funding allocated. One employee described the ongoing brain drain and feeling of despondency among staff as “the JPL that we knew is gone.”
LAist is facing its own funding challenges due to the elimination of public media funding across the US. The loss of $1.7 million in annual budget will impact our ability to provide essential coverage of local issues.
However, with your support, LAist can continue to be a trusted voice for Southern California’s community. Becoming a monthly member or increasing your donation today will help sustain our mission and ensure that we can maintain our commitment to independent reporting.
