A JPMorgan Chase analyst, Nicolas Welch, has spoken out about being fired – only to be reinstated after a dramatic turn of events. During a town hall meeting where employees could ask questions, Welch expressed his concerns about the bank’s return-to-office (RTO) mandate, which requires all 317,233 employees to work in the office five days a week starting next month.
Welch’s comments sparked applause from his coworkers, but CEO Jamie Dimon was unmoved. Dimon complained that the RTO mandate would improve productivity and reduce waste, citing an increase in headcount over the past few years. He also criticized employees who signed petitions to rescind the mandate, calling them “ungrateful.”
After the meeting, Welch received a threatening text from his supervisor, Garrett Monaghan, ordering him to clean off his desk and leave immediately. However, JPMorgan Chase’s executive director of global IT support, Megan Mead, soon intervened, explaining that Welch had not been fired and still had his job.
In a stunning turn of events, Monaghan later apologized to Welch via text message, saying he owed him an apology and a beer. The incident has left many employees shaken, with some speculating that Monaghan’s actions may have been an on-the-spot firing. However, JPMorgan Chase has confirmed that Welch was never fired and is in good standing with the bank.
Welch remains upset about how he was treated, blaming the fear caused by the RTO mandate for his initial dismissal. Despite the ordeal, he has gained a level of fame among JPMorgan Chase workers, who have sent him emails and texts of support, dubbing him the “Voice of America.”
