A federal judge has rejected President Donald Trump’s plan to remove American Sign Language (ASL) interpreters from certain White House briefings. The National Association of the Deaf had sued, arguing that excluding deaf Americans from these events would violate disability laws and deny them access to important information. Judge Amir H. Ali ruled that a publicly accessible ASL interpreter must be provided for White House media briefings held by the president or Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt. However, he did not extend this requirement to events conducted by Vice President JD Vance or First Lady Melania Trump. The judge noted that excluding deaf Americans from these briefings would cause “clear and present harm” that cannot be easily remedied after the fact. This ruling is a victory for deaf Americans who want equal access to information during White House press briefings.
