A federal judge has ordered the White House to start providing American Sign Language (ASL) interpretation at press briefings when President Trump or Karoline Leavitt speak. The National Association of the Deaf (NAD) and two deaf men filed a lawsuit against the White House, claiming it violated Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act by excluding deaf Americans from programming. Judge Amir Ali issued a preliminary injunction, citing clear harm to deaf Americans who cannot access important information in English due to language barriers. ASL interpretation must be visible and signed by qualified interpreters. The ruling applies to press briefings only, but the NAD will continue to pursue further relief.
