A recent study by Northwestern University researchers has found that consuming only fruit and veggie juices may have negative effects on health. The team analyzed saliva and fecal samples from three different study groups, one of which stuck to an all-juice diet consisting of store-bought products.
After just three days, the juice-only group showed a significant increase in bad bacteria, particularly in the oral cavity. This was attributed to the lack of fiber in the juice, which can lead to an overabundance of carbohydrates and sugar. The researchers found that without enough fiber, harmful bacteria can thrive and impact metabolism, immunity, and even mental health.
The study suggests that blending is the best way to preserve fiber, and for kids, a diet high in processed foods combined with juice can be detrimental. The researchers recommend a balanced diet with whole foods as the primary source of nutrition, and suggest that those who enjoy juice consume it in moderation and consider adding a fiber supplement to balance out their diet.
The findings support the idea that juicing, when done alone, may not be as healthy as previously thought.
