Juliana Stratton has won the Democratic primary in Illinois, defeating US Representative Raja Krishnamoorthi with nearly 90% of the vote tallied on Tuesday night. With a strong lead of over six percentage points, Stratton secured the victory, becoming the first Black woman to represent Illinois in the Senate.
A progressive candidate backed by Governor JB Pritzker, Stratton had been trailing behind Krishnamoorthi in polling until recent weeks, when her campaign received an influx of funding and shifted public sentiment on immigration. Despite facing competition from Robin Kelly on her left, Stratton’s message resonated with voters, helping her secure the win.
Krishnamoorthi conceded defeat graciously, acknowledging that he did not win but expressing his support for Stratton. The Democratic primary winner is expected to win the general election in November, as Republicans have not won a statewide election in Illinois in over a decade.
Stratton’s victory marks a significant moment in American history, with her becoming the 15th Black US senator. Her campaign promises include Medicare for all, a $25 per hour minimum wage, and abolishing ICE. She vowed to “fight for” Illinois voters and keep her promise to be their fighter.
