The Fourth of July holiday commemorates the adoption of the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. While spontaneous celebrations began shortly after, it wasn’t until the War of 1812 that observations became commonplace. A federal law was passed in 1870 making Independence Day a national holiday.
This year’s holiday hours are as follows: Government buildings and offices, post offices, courts, and schools will be closed. U.S. stock markets and banks will also be closed on Friday. Most retailers, such as Target and Walmart, will remain open with some offering promotions. Grocery stores may have varying hours by location.
With millions expected to travel domestically over the long weekend, AAA forecasts 72.2 million Americans will hit the road between June 28 and July 6. This marks a significant increase of 1.7 million over last year and 7 million more than in 2019. Travelers are advised to inspect their vehicles before departure to avoid issues such as dead batteries and flat tires.
