Jupiter, the largest planet in our solar system, is about to become slightly closer and brighter than usual. On December 6, it will reach a distance of 380 million miles from Earth, its closest point this year. This alignment with the Sun will make Jupiter shine brighter than at any other time.
The best viewing opportunity will be on December 7, when Jupiter will be in opposition. The planet can be spotted in the southeast horizon around 4:20 p.m., and it will move south in the sky throughout the evening. However, weather conditions might affect stargazing. Oregonians are advised to check the forecast before heading out.
Luckily, the Geminid meteor shower, which peaks on December 13, coincides with Jupiter’s opposition. Clear skies would be ideal for viewing both events. Although forecasts predict rain or clouds in most of the state, partly cloudy conditions are predicted for the far southeastern corner of Oregon.
