Jupiter’s Clouds Reveal Hidden Chemical Mix

A new study, led by amateur astronomer Steve Hill and Patrick Irwin from Oxford University, has debunked the long-held theory that Jupiter’s clouds are made of frozen ammonia ice. Instead, researchers found a murky mix of chemicals, mostly ammonium hydrosulphide and smog, sitting lower in the atmosphere than expected. The discovery was made possible by combining efforts from citizen scientists like Hill, who previously mapped Jupiter’s atmosphere using specialized filters and telescopes, with advanced instruments like ESO’s MUSE.
