Jussie Smollett Settles with City of Chicago Over Racist Hoax Lawsuit

A settlement has been reached in the civil lawsuit between the City of Chicago and former “Empire” actor Jussie Smollett, according to a court document. The city sued Smollett in 2019 after prosecutors charged him with filing a false police report, seeking $130,000 to cover the cost of the investigation.

Smollett was previously convicted on five counts of disorderly conduct for allegedly staging a racist and homophobic attack against himself in downtown Chicago in 2019. However, his conviction was overturned by the Illinois Supreme Court last November due to claims of double jeopardy.

The city had initially sued Smollett after Cook County State’s Attorney Kim Foxx dropped charges against him in exchange for a fine and community service. A special prosecutor later investigated, and Smollett was found guilty before being released on probation and ordered to pay restitution.

Details on the settlement terms remain undisclosed. The next status hearing in U.S. District Court is scheduled for May 29.
