Justin Trudeau has announced his resignation as Canadian prime minister and leader of the Liberal Party. The decision comes after sagging poll numbers and internal party dissent. Trudeau will remain in both roles until a new Liberal Party leader is selected, who will then become prime minister until federal elections are held.
In an emotional speech from Rideau Cottage, Trudeau expressed gratitude for Canadians’ resilience, generosity, and determination. He cited his commitment to strengthening the middle class, supporting reconciliation, advancing LGBTQ rights, and combating climate change. However, he stated that if he is unable to be the best option in the next election due to internal battles, he cannot lead the party.
Trudeau’s tenure has been marked by progressive policies, including landmark achievements for human rights, particularly LGBTQ rights. His administration passed groundbreaking legislation protecting gender identity and expression, banned conversion therapy, and issued gender-neutral passports with “X” as a gender marker.
Despite this progress, Trudeau faces criticism from some who argue that more work remains to be done. The Liberal Party is currently trailing behind the Conservative Party in polls, with opposition parties vying for an early election.
Governor General Mary Simon has agreed to suspend Parliament until March 24, allowing time for the party to choose a new leader and manage the uncertainty surrounding Trudeau’s departure.
