The NFL is investigating allegations of inappropriate behavior by Ravens kicker Justin Tucker during massage-therapy sessions, but a quick settlement could end the investigation prematurely. To conduct a proper investigation, the league needs to identify and interview six accusers who claim to have experienced misconduct.
However, the NFL has limited power without a subpoena, making it difficult to compel cooperation from potential witnesses. In recent cases, such as the lawsuit against Browns quarterback Deshaun Watson, settlements were reached with confidentiality clauses, effectively stalling the investigation.
This approach is a legitimate legal strategy, but one that could be used by Tucker to avoid accountability. With six accusers, each potentially seeking $233,333 in damages per week of an unpaid suspension, settling quickly would allow Tucker to minimize his financial liability and escape scrutiny.
Tucker has denied all allegations, calling them “unequivocally false.” If he refuses to offer a settlement, the league may take action against him, including suspension or other penalties. This scenario could play out similarly to that of Watson, who was suspended 11 games without pay in 2023.
